Veterinary schools in Nigeria are widely dispersed across the country but not all Universities of the country offer Veterinary medicine.  To study Veterinary Medicine, the admission requirements include O’level subject combination {these may be WASSCE (West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination), NECO (National Examination Council) exam or GCE (General Certificate Examination)} which include at least 5 credits in the following subjects- English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A credit in any Trade subject is usually an added advantage. JAMB (Joint Admission Matriculation Board) UTME subject combination include English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a score of at least 200. Asides these, there are Direct Entry requirements and special considerations (waivers) which are peculiar to each school.

Veterinary Medicine in all Veterinary Schools is a professional course in which DVM is awarded after six years of study at the university for those who got admitted through UTME and five years for those through Direct Entry with HND (Higher National Diploma) and Advanced Level result.

These are the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA (UNN).

University of Nigeria, Nsukka is a federal university located at Innovation centre in Enugu State. UNN was founded in 1960 and is one of the Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in UNN operate a course system. Apart from the requirement mentioned above, UNN accept holders of Higher Diploma in Animal Health and Husbandry or other equivalent Diploma, plus credit in Physics and a pass in Mathematics for O’Level result or its equivalent. Candidates with good university degree with a minimum of second class honors lower division in relevant science areas plus basic entry requirement are eligible for direct entry admission.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN (UI).

University of Ibadan is a federal university located at Ibadan in Oyo State. UI was founded in 1948 and is one of the Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. UI is the only Veterinary school currently operating a subject based system. Hence, the students sit for DVM Examination for their Preclinical, Paraclinical and Clinical years. For admission process, one can adhere strictly with the afore-mentioned criteria.

  1. AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY(ABU).

Ahmadu Bello University is a federal university located at Samaru, a suburb of Zaria in Kaduna State. The school was founded in 1962 and is a Veterinary school in Nigeria as well. ABU currently run a course based system of teaching. ABU accepts 3 A’Level passes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics. They also accept HND lower credit in Animal Science as well as distinction in Poultry Production, Animal Health and Animal Product Inspection.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF JOS (UNIJOS).

UNIJOS is a federal university located at Jos in Plateau State. The school was founded in 1975 and recently joined the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria.

UNIJOS operate a course based system of teaching and one can adhere strictly to the afore-mentioned general requirements for admission processing.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN (UNILORIN).

UNILORIN is a federal university located at Ilorin of Kwara State. The school was founded in 1975 and has been part of the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. UNILORIN operate a course based system of teaching and one can adhere strictly to the afore-mentioned general requirements for admission processing.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI (UNIMAID).

UNIMAID is a federal university located at Bama Road, Maiduguri in Borno State. The school was founded in 1975 and is part of the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria.

UNIMAID operate a course based system of teaching and admission processing does not have special requirements.

  1. USMANU DAN FODIO UNIVERSITY (UDUSOK).

UDUSOK is a federal university located at Sokoto in Sokoto State and the school was founded in 1975 and a member on the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. UDUSOK operate a course based system of teaching and apart from the afore-mentioned general requirements for admission processing, UDUSOK accept Agricultural Science and Health Science for Direct Entry.

  1. FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, ABEOKUTA (FUNAAB)

FUNAAB is a federal university located at Abeokuta in Ogun State and a member on the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. The school was founded in 1988. FUNAAB requires at least HND upper credit to 200 level in addition to the UTME requirements discussed. FUNAAB operate a course based system of teaching.

  1. MICHAEL OKPARA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, UMUDIKE (MOUAU)

MOUAU is a federal university located at Umuahia in Abia State with Private Mailbox 7267. The school was founded in 1992. MOUAU joined the list of Veterinary schools in Nigeria years after and operate a course based system of teaching and one can adhere strictly to the afore-mentioned general requirements for admission processing.

  1. FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE, MAKURDI (FUAM).

FUAM is a federal university located at Makurdi of Benue State. The school was founded in 1992. FUAM joined the list of Veterinary schools in Nigeria and operate a course based system of teaching and they accept Agricultural Science in lieu of Biology. They also accept HND lower credit in Animal Science as well as distinction in Poultry Production, Animal Health and Animal Product Inspection.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA (UNIABUJA).

UNIABUJA is a federal university that has its Faculty of Veterinary Medicine located in its main campus in Giri along Abuja Airport Road. The school was founded in 1990 and is part of the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria. For admission process, UNIABUJA accepts OND/HND upper credit in Animal Health and Production or BSc in Animal Science, Biological Science (Zoology), Microbiology and other closely related science courses in addition to the general requirements.

  1. UNIVERSITY OF BENIN (UNIBEN).

UNIBEN is a federal university that has been established in 1970. It is located in Benin City in Edo State.             UNIBEN joined the list of Veterinary Schools in Nigeria recently and the school’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established in 2013 but operation will only be kick-starting in 2019/2020 academic session. Currently the school has only Veterinary medical students in 100level.
